About Us

"Jenny’s creative skills and talent for presentation, and the attention to detail, is what marks out Portland House as extra special. Patrick and Catherine, Co. Clare, Eire.Quote from guest book."

John and Jenny Jarvis have been busy refurbishing the house since they took it over in August 2004 to an excellent standard of award winning accommodation.

Many of the soft furnishings have been designed and/or made by Jenny.
The house is Grade 2 listed - the oldest part of the house is Georgian (1676) - and has a wealth of character and charm plus a fascinating history. It had been part of a much larger establishment, and in the nineteenth century was called the Whitchurch Lunatic Asylum. We have the records of the 1841 - 1881 censuses which corroborate this.

"We just want you to feel relaxed in our lovely home, which is not too large but spacious enough for guests to feel very comfortable, and especially cosy during the autumn and winter months. In the spring/ summer you can enjoy the interesting award winning garden or during autumn/winter sit in our very attractive lounge with a log fire; as well as enjoy the food in the elegant dining room ".
