Portland House Guest Accommodation

in The Wye Valley

Grade ll listed original parts built in 1679

We have off street parking and one parking space designated for the disabled.

Portland House is an impressive dwelling dating, in some part, back to the 17th century, and situated close to the border between England and Wales in the picturesque Wye Valley. The House started life as a modest cottage around 1650. After which Georgian and Victorian extensions were added. The House was converted from a private dwelling to a private hotel in the 1970s. It has a wealth of character and charm - not overly large but spacious enough for our guests to feel relaxed and comfortable. The House has an interesting history. It was once part of a much larger establishment and in the nineteenth century became the doctor’s quarters and the Whitchurch Hospital and Asylum (still a mad house to this day). We have copies of the 1841-1881 census records for that time listing the staff, patients and the poor inmates. Later, in Edwardian times, it became a young gentlemen’s academy (boys' school for the gentry). Our ghost is friendly and not at all scary, her name is Gwyneth.

We've undertaken an extensive refurbishment programme, restoring a considerable part of our beautiful house and garden to an excellent standard of award winning accommodation. We believe this is why we have been selected for inclusion in two publications both entitled Best B and Bs in the UK, one published by the AA, the other by Worldwide Altas. co.uk

For those of you who have already stayed with us over the last 5 years, we're sure you'll be pleased to know some of the latest improvements which have included the re-vamping of the back hall way, first staircase and first landing. Behind the scenes we've had the kitchen gutted and re-done. Anyone who has been through that sort of experience will understand the trauma! But it's been worth it and we now enjoy superb new cooking facilities. Our latest refurbishments have been to the Magnolia and Doward Rooms. Both with brand new ensuites, new beds and new carpets. Now everywhere has had 'the treatment'.
